So as many of you know, I have a slight car addiction and a serious case of car ADD. There are so many cool cars to own and I’ve learned (gotten lucky) enough to find good deals and make some money or break even on owning them. I got a classic mini, a car I had always wanted since I saw them at a British car show in Washington state. I picked up a nice one in January and had some fun with it, but knew it wasn’t something I wanted forever and that it would take a while to sell and find the right buyer.

It was a blast to drive and really taught me the concept of how driving a slow car fast can be a lot of fun. I even took it on some dirt tracks (nothing crazy) and tossed it around. Surprisingly for an older British car, it was super reliable for me and I had no issues with it as my primary driver (until I got an offer of course).

After having it listed for 3 months a buyer contacted me and he lived three hours away! He asked that we meet halfway which was fine for me because 1) he did not haggle over price and 2) it gave me one last chance to experience her 55 or so HP.

The day after he made a deposit the brakes started making terrible noises and crapped out on me. Fortunately new pads and rotors was only $90, but still a pain since I had a buyer lined up! Also had to replace the tie rods.

We finally found an evening to meet up last night and I drove it to meet him with my wife following in her amazingly awesome 2008 Camry (old trusty, never lets us down).

We stopped for dinner and when I came out to the car I realized I had a serious flat tire. Not sure how I didn’t notice, but the roads in Auburn are super bad and the Mini is anything but a smooth ride. Changed the tire and drove the remaining hour or so and met up with him.

Best buyer imaginable. He just handed over the cash without even test driving it or really asking any questions. I was essentially force feeding him information about the car just because I wanted to make sure he understood it, but he seemed more interested in just taking the keys and hitting the road.

I was pretty emotional about selling it, but the flat tire on a hot Alabama day made it a little easier to cope with saying goodbye.

.........

Well, as I was writing this the buyer texted me and asked how to open the bonnet. It made me remember how much I had learned about the car, mechanical tinkering in general, and all the little things that were unique to it. Now I think I am definitely already missing it. Oh well, at least the cash from the sale will help fund big oil because my sole car now gets about 10mpg if I’m lucky!

I’ve already started the search for a replacement...let me know if anyone sees any good deals on nice BMW 2002’s!

Thank you. It was well taken care of for sure. The buyer was astounded when he saw it.
